Parametric study of the progressive collapse of 2D framed structures

چکیده
In this paper we study the response of 2D framed structures made of reinforced concrete to the sudden removal of columns. For comparative reasons, the 2D frames are considered as part of 3D structures with same overall structural mass and external load potential. In particular, we study two sets of 2D frames, with different height-bay ratio λ of the structural cells. Each set counts 3 frames with different hierarchical level n, defining structures that range from hierarchical to homogeneous. Hierarchical structures have massive primary structure consisting of few large elements while homogeneous structures are made of many thin structural elements. Employing an algorithm based on Discrete Elements, we simulate progressive collapse until the final stage, considering collisions between the structural elements and with the ground. We point out the mechanisms that trigger progressive collapse when the columns are strong and when they are weak. We quantify the robustness in terms of Reserve Strength Ratio RSR and show the influence of λ and n on the RSR, that depends on the activated collapse mechanism and on the extent of the initial damage.

Numerical Study of Progressive Collapse in Framed Structures: A New Approach for Dynamic Column Removal (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Progressive collapse is a situation where local failure of a primary structural component leads to the collapse of adjoining members which, in turn, leads to additional collapse. Hence, the total damage is disproportionate to the original cause. The most common local failure in framed structure is assumed to be column failure. In this paper, a new approach for dynamic column removal in framed s...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Progressive Collapse Potential in Steel Buildings with Composite Floor System
Abnormal loads due to natural events, implementation errors and some other issues can lead to occurrence of progressive collapse in structures. Most of the past researches consist of 2- Dimensional (2D) models of steel frames without consideration of the floor system effects, which reduces the accuracy of the modeling. While employing a 3-Dimensional (3D) model and modeling the concrete slab sy...
متن کاملA Parametric Study on the Progressive Collapse Potential of Steel Buildings under Truck Collision
In this paper, the initiation and propagation of structural damage in a building due to the truck collision to one of its corner columns were investigated. For this purpose, a three-dimensional 4-story moment resisting steel frame with intermediate ductility was considered. The structure was designed using ETABS software under standard dead, live, and earthquake loads, and then impact loading w...
متن کاملPROGRESSIVE COLLAPSE ANALYSIS OF RCC STRUCTURES
The study aims to investigate the progressive collapse behaviour of RCC building under extreme loading events such as gas explosion in kitchen, terroristic attack, vehicular collisions and accidental overloads. The behavioural changes have been investigated and node displacements are computed when the building is subjected to sudden collapse of the load beari...
متن کاملEffect of Structural Height on the Location of Key Element in Progressive Collapse of RC Structures
After the failure of an element in a structure, its loads should be redistributed on the other elements and the structure must provide some new paths to carry the load. If such new load paths are not provided, collapse progression will begin in the structure. As the beginning of progressive collapse in a structure is more sensitive to the missing of an element, the location of that element is m...
